DPA Microphones DLS4000 Overview

The DLS4000 Location Sound Microphone Kit from DPA is a comprehensive package of microphones and accessories designed to meet all your standard location recording needs. It includes a total of 20 microphones including shotguns for booming, micro shotguns for discreet plant miking, a gooseneck mic, and a range of lavaliers for close-miking the talent.

Each condenser microphone in the kit has been chosen based on the input of professional sound engineers working within the film and broadcast industries. The 13 lavs provided offer an assortment of colors and sensitivity responses, allowing you to find just the right match for presenters and performers. In addition to the mics, the kit includes 20+ extra cables, holders, concealers, adapters, clips, and more. This extensive set is meticulously packaged in a 3-layer case that’s ready to go where you’re going. For an itemized list of the individual elements, please see the list under “In the Box.” A full description of each of the components is provided below.

DPA Microphones 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Microphone

The black DPA 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun is a professional, multipurpose, weather-resistant microphone well suited to interviews, dialog, and voice-overs for video, DIY journalism, indie film, and broadcast applications. The mic weighs only .35 oz and features a built-in shockmount and 4″ gooseneck allowing for a wide range of positioning options on set—it’s lighter and more flexible than traditional boom mics making it easier to interview subjects from a distance. The small footprint also makes it exceptionally good as a directional plant mic, delivering great audio from tight spots.

The supercardioid polar pattern focuses audio capture on the subject, reducing unwanted off-axis background sound and enhancing speech intelligibility. In addition, the mic has low self-noise, high sensitivity, and is capable of handling high SPLs, for natural undistorted results even during unpredictable shoots when a subject yells or shouts. The 4097 is optimized for speech with a flat-frequency response up until the 2 dB soft boost in the 10 kHz range providing the crisp presense typical of DPA microphones— clear, consistent sound that requires less postproduction tweaking.

Optimal powering is provided via 48V phantom power, although the mic will also run on 12V phantom power but at a reduced capacity to handle high SPLs. Similarly, the 4097 can operate on 5 to 10V from bodypack transmitters. It can also work on 3 to 4V from low-DC transmitters, but again the reduced power means the mic is more likely to distort if the talent or interview subject shouts or gets loud.

The 4097 is built to handle the rigors of location shooting and is IP58-certified for resistance to moisture, extreme temperatures, and humidity. With housing covered in a water-repellant nano coating and the sensitive amp at the core of the mic hermetically sealed, the 4097 micro shotgun is ready for action in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations.

A Versatile Solution for Interviews, Dialog, and Voice-Overs
  • The high-sensitivity condenser capsule picks up spoken words at a distance but can still handle loud SPL peaks up to 135 dB.
  • With a supercardioid pickup pattern that focuses audio capture on the subject, unwanted background sound is naturally attenuated—for clear, intelligible speech.
  • The narrow pickup pattern reduces reflections and noise for better voice-overs in hotel rooms and other on-the-go locations.
  • Its small footprint and light weight make the 4097 much easier to use with a boom for distant interviewing.
  • The matte-black, non-reflective finish and discreet styling are well suited to TV and video applications.
Flexible Postitioning
  • The 4″ gooseneck and redesigned swiveling MicroDot connection offers a wide variety of positioning options to give you optimal sound with booms and wireless transmitters.
Outstanding as a Directional Plant Mic
  • The supercardioid polar pattern lets the mic pick up dialog even in noisy situations.
  • The short barrel length and free-running, lockable MicroDot nut allow you to easily get the mic in tight spots for great sound.
  • IP58-certified, the 4097 is resistant to moisture, extreme temperatures, and humidity with a water-repellant nano coating on the housing and hermetic sealing of the sensitive amplifier at the core of the mic.
  • The built-in shockmount makes the mic a great fit for car mounting—clipped to the dashboard or packed away above a sun visor.
DPA Microphones 4098 CORE Supercardioid Microphone with 6″ Boom with Full Gooseneck and Microdot Connector (White)

The white 4098 CORE Supercardioid Microphone with 6″ Boom with Full Gooseneck and Microdot Connector from DPA is a versatile mic engineered for public speaking, panels, conferences, and meetings. The elegant, low-profile design delivers clear, intelligible speech reproduction for demanding professional applications.

The 4098 offers several configuration options, this model’s short boom is well suited to ceiling installation. In addition, this version of the microphone is designed for use with wireless systems and terminates in a microdot connector, allowing you to use a detachable adapter to connect to the wireless transmitter of your choice (adapter and transmitter available separately).

Outstanding Speech Quality
  • For use in panels, boardroom applications, and videoconference situations, the DPA 4098 offers trouble-free installation and delivers pristine, clear sound.
  • The mic reproduces crisp, intelligible speech up to the standards of demanding professionals and panelists, including interpreters who need to be able to clearly hear a speaker’s every nuance.
  • The supercardioid polar pattern focuses audio capture tightly on the person directly in front of the mic, picking up less unwanted background sound and helping to reduce feedback when loudspeakers are used for sound reinforcement.
  • The microphone capsule’s consistent off-axis response means that speaking into the side of the mic doesn’t make the audio sound worse, it just drops the voice level.
  • Even passionate speakers are no problem for the 4098; the capsule can handle loud speech at peak volumes of up to 133 dB SPL before distortion occurs.
  • The factory-mounted foam windscreen helps to reduce breath and plosive noise.
A Flexible Microphone Solution
  • The 4098 is available in a variety of configurations for use with podiums, desks, and tabletops; and the shorter models can be mounted in the ceiling.
  • Elegantly designed, the low-profile appearance is well suited to videoconferencing and public announcements.
  • This version features a 6″ boom with a full gooseneck to provide optimal positioning for ceiling use.

A low-cut filter at 100 Hz has been incorporated in the 4071’s capsule, so the built-in preamplifier (and the wireless system) will have more headroom for clear, distortion-free audio. Additionally, the low-cut filter removes low-frequency rumble, noise, and proximity effect.

Despite the small size, the diaphragm design offers a clean and natural sound optimized for the human voice. The 6061 CORE features a 3mm capsule that is fully comparable to DPA’s larger microphones but allows it to be even more inconspicuous and easily disguised in clothing or costumes. The entire mic has a pleasant matte finish for a smaller and less obtrusive appearance.
Soft-Boost Grid Included
The pre-fitted protection cap gives a 4 dB soft boost in the 8 to 20 kHz range for added clarity and can be detached for cleaning.
Lower Sensitivity for Loud Vocals and Speech
The 6061 CORE features a less sensitive capsule designed for loud speech and vocal performances at levels up to 144 dB SPL before clipping. It also makes the mic well suited to concealment in clothing and costumes and allows the mic to be hidden at the subject’s hairline without overloading the input levels.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern
The forgiving omnidirectional pickup pattern captures sound from all around the mic and provides a consistent frequency response, even for off-axis sound. This helps to supply clear, intelligible speech and vocals, even when the talent turns away from the microphone.
Reliable Performance
Both the mic and its protection cap are made of durable stainless steel and treated with a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating that allows it to tolerate high temperatures and makes it impact resilient and abrasion resistant.
Tough, Moisture-Resistant Construction
The 6061 is certified IP58 for dust and moisture resistance. The rugged 5.9′ cable is built with Kevlar strain relief to survive the constant twists, bends, and pulls that are part of everyday use in harsh environments.
Additional Options
This version of the DPA 6061 CORE does not include windscreens or clips; they are available separately.
